WHAT CAUSES MOLD?

There are precise conditions that must be met for mold to grow within a home. These include: a surface to grow on; darkness; warm temperatures; oxygen; moisture; and time. Every home normally contains each of these with the exception of one – moisture.

Moisture is the key that determines whether mold will grow in your home or not. This can be caused by major water damage from flooding. Other sources of moisture within a home typically related to mold growth are: humidity, condensation, leaking pipes, roof leaks, a damp basement, water build up close to the foundation, and even wet clothes. Poor ventilation is associated with mold growth as well.

COMMON SIGNS OF MOLD

There are three common signs that reveal mold is likely present:

Visible Mold

Spotting mold is a simple way to know for sure that you have mold growing. Often mold is present and cannot be easily seen. The danger with visible mold is that there is possibly much more of it underneath the surface that you cannot see. If you spot mold, it is best to do something about it immediately to prevent further growth.

Humidity & Condensation

High levels of humidity or the presence of condensation are signs that mold could be present. Mold tends to thrive in humid areas and can even live off the humid air. If your home has suffered any water damage, it is best to ensure that the humidity levels in the space remain low to prevent mold growth. Condensation buildup is an indication that the area may be too humid.

Moldy Smell

If there are no visible signs of mold, you may still be able to smell it. An unusual stale smell is an indication that mold exists. If the smell intensifies while the heat or air conditioning is switched on, it could mean that the mold is growing within your air ventilation system. Do not ignore a new strange smell as it could be a sign that dangerous mold is thriving in a place you would never see.

COMMON TYPES OF MOLD

There are various types of mold often found in and around the home. When thinking of mold, many people usually think of Stachybotrys chartarum, commonly referred to as black mold. This type of mold can be extremely harmful. The toxins it produces cause severe health problems such as allergic reactions, breathing conditions, sinus infections, asthma attacks, fatigue, and depression.

Although black mold is one of the most dangerous, there are many other common types of mold that can be just as serious.

Common types of mold that pose a risk to your health:

  • Alternaria
  • Aspergillus
  • Aureobasidium
  • Botrytis
  • Chaetomium
  • Cladosporium
  • Fusarium
  • Penicillium
  • Serpula lacrymans
  • Trichoderma
  • Ulocladium
