Mold In The Home: 3 Common Questions

Mold is a topic many people feel they know a lot about, even if they haven’t studied it extensively. They think of mold and picture green fuzzy stuff on cheese that’s been in the fridge for too long. Or the grey blotches that appear on bread that’s been sitting on the top of the shelf.

Maybe they feel that, because they can’t see any mold in their home, there’s no way it can be there, or that it only becomes a problem when you can physically see mold growing up and down your walls.

Mold Remediation

At TCB EnviroCorp our mission is not just to remediate mold for clients. We want to educate them on the mold they do or might have in their home, and how to prevent it in the future. This includes taking certified air quality samples, reading moisture levels, and giving accurate information based on science to our clients.

With that being said, here are three common questions our Florida clients ask about mold:

Can Bleach Kill Mold?

The sweet end-all-be-all of disinfectants, what the bathroom always smells like when you give it a good scrub – our cleaning icon, bleach. As great as bleach is at getting out stains in your favorite white t-shirt, many people believe it can be used to purge your home of mold, as well. But bleach should not be used to try to kill mold on your own.

Mold is a type of fungus that thrives on moisture and reproduces through light spores that travel easily through the air. Bleach does not kill mold – it just discolors and agitates it. Not only is this an ineffective way of taking care of mold, but it is also dangerous.

Mold often occurs in enclosed, dark, damp spaces, and using copious amounts of a chemical like bleach in a space like that can have extremely negative effects on your health, including dizziness, damage to your respiratory system, and in extreme cases even death. It is especially hazardous to homes with small children or animals.

For the safety of your home, bleach should be avoided when it comes to mold remediation.

Is Black Mold The Only Mold That Is Dangerous?

Toxic black mold is the most hazardous mold you could have in your home. However, all types and kinds of mold are dangerous over time.

There are three categories of mold – toxic, allergenic, and pathogenic. Each of these represents a threat to overall wellness for you, your family, and even your pets. This is true whether or not you’re aware of its presence!

Mold needs to be detected, then removed by a licensed professional.

If I Can’t See Mold, Why Does It Need To Be Removed?

Being able to actually see mold growing in your home is definitely cause for alarm. However, there are many places where dangerous mold can grow that aren’t visible in a typical home – places such as in the ceiling, in the walls, and behind kitchen appliances.

If you can’t see mold but you believe it might be present, call a licensed professional for indoor air quality testing.
